The Celestial Tournament – Yu’la Strategy

Yu’la, baby daughter of the imposing green serpent matriarch Yu’lon,  appears in the Celestial Tournament as one of the final challengers to defeat before being declared the new champion.

*This strategy was originally seen in this guide. I have never made any claims that I created this strategy.*

Pet and Ability Lineup:

Your Squad:

Ghostly Skull with Shadow Slash, Ghostly Bite, and Unholy Ascension. (Undead)

Bonkers with Jab, Dodge, and Tornado Punch. (Humanoid)

Any Humanoid pet, but I chose a Pandaren Monk with Takedown, Focus Chi, and Blackout Kick. (Humanoid)

Enemy Team:

Yu’la, Broodling of Yu’lon, with Jade Breath, Emerald Presence, and Lift-Off. (Dragonkin)

The Action:

Lead off with your Ghostly Skull, and cast Ghostly Bite. Ghostly Bite will stun you for one round. Pass and continue by casting Shadow Slash. Yu’la will buff herself with Emerald Presence and execute her other abilities against you. Your goal with the Ghostly Skull is to put a little damage on Yu’la until she kills you. On your Undead family ability’s freebie death round, cast Unholy Ascension, thus causing Yu’la to take 25% more damage from all your pets attacks for 9 rounds.

Next comes Bonkers, and he will do most, if not all (as you can see in this particular video the third pet was not even needed) of the damage required to defeat Yu’la. We go first, so use Tornado Punch to do some big damage, and possibly stun, Yu’la. Continue to Jab while Yu’la spams Jade Breath. If Yu’la uses Lift-Off, cast Dodge to completely block the damage from the second part of the attack. Continue to use Tornado Punch on cooldown; otherwise, Jab. You should either kill or get Yu’la very close to death with your second pet.

If your third pet is needed, bring them in to clean up the last few percent.

More Details:

There are 2 player-available pets in the game with the ability Unholy Ascension. The Ghostly Skull is by far the more accessible of the two, the other being the elusive, unpredictably spawned and extremely popular wild catch, Unborn Val’kyr. Both pets are just fine in this slot, but for the purposes of this guide I assume not everyone is so lucky to obtain this pet. If you have the Unborn Val’kyr, use it instead to make use of Curse of Doom in the second ability slot. Ghostly Skull is available to purchase in the Dalaran Sewers at a base price of 40g, from Darahir, who resides in the northernmost room of the Underbelly. The Ghostly Skull can be learned as Breed#6, or H/H, Breed#7, or H/P, and Breed#12, or H/B. Any breed is acceptable for this fight.

Bonkers is obtainable via collecting 500 Timeless Coins and using them to purchase Kukuru’s Cache Key, which in turn is used to open Timeless Chests. Each timeless chest has a chance to have random items in it, including Bonkers. Master Kukuru is located here on the Timeless Isle, inside the cave at Red Stone Run. Since random is random, your mileage will vary on obtaining this pet. I had a hard time getting my first one, but have had other people report that they were destroying 3-4 a session in pursuit of Burdens of Eternity and other items. He is not cageable so obtaining the breed you want is a difficult enterprise.  For this fight against Yu’la a speed of 288+ is recommended and makes the fight a measure easier by being able to predict Lift-Off and avoid damage with Dodge. This excludes a few breeds of this pet, but the fight is absolutely doable with any breed regardless; the speed stat just makes things a lot easier. If you come up with a less ideal breed the encounter can still be defeated. Bonkers is learned as rare and comes in several breeds; Breed#4, or P/P, Breed#5 or S/S, Breed#7, or H/P, Breed#8 or P/S, and Breed#9 or H/S.

As I mentioned in the video, your third slot may not even be used. I chose a Pandaren Monk because he was what I had available, but any humanoid type pet will do in this slot. Bonkers will do the majority of the wet work in this battle and unless you have come down with a horrible bout of misses the third pet should only be needed for a turn or two.
